U.S. SENATORS MEET WITH LEADERS OF AZERI OPPOSITION PARTIES

Richard Lugar and Barak Obman, the U.S. senators, who visited Azerbaijan, met with leaders of the opposition parties and constitutors of the elections blocs on Wednesday.

The attending were Ali Karimli, the chairman of the Popular Front of Azerbaijan Party (PFAP-reformers), Isa Gambar, the chairman of the Musavat Party, Sardar Jalaloglu, the first deputy chairman of the Azerbaijan Democratic Party, Etibar Mammadov, the former leader of the Azerbaijan National Independence Party, Lala Shovkat, the leader of the �National Unity’ movement, Ilyas Ismayilov, the chairman of the Justice Party and Asim Mollazada, the chairman of the Democratic Reforms Party, Trend reports.

Richard Lugar is the chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on foreign affairs, senator from the Indiana St., member of the Republic Party, Barak Obman вЂ" senator from Illinois St., member of the Azerbaijan Democratic Party.

According to Karimli, the meeting centered on the forthcoming parliamentary elections, preparations for the elections, participation of the opposition parties in the elections. Senators were informed about factors hindering of holding of free and democratic elections.

The opposition leaders noted that there was no public control over the list of voters, approximately one million of citizens did not have identification cards, as well mass actions were not sanctioned in the regions. The senators were awarded of holding of black PR in regard to the opposition, particularly, the PFAP.

The members of the U.S. Senate mentioned necessity of holding of free and fair elections in Azerbaijan. They promised to inform the Azerbaijani President about the spoken problems and defects, and take practical steps to provide holding of democratic elections.
