“There is some progress in determination of the legal status of the Caspian Sea and the results of the last meeting in Astana may be given positive appreciation,” Khalaf Khalafov, the Deputy Foreign Minister, also Special Representative of Azerbaijan on Determination of the legal status of the Caspian Sea, told Trend in an exclusive interview. The 19th meeting of the Special Working Group of the Caspian countries on determination of the legal status of the Caspian Sea was held in Astana.
According to Khalafov, the sides archived agreement on separate items of the Convention on the legal status of the sea. “All Caspian countries expressed their intention in regard to increase of attempts on solution of the issue,” the Deputy Minister noted. He also voiced confidence that the next meeting, which will be held in Moscow, will achieve larger progress in this respect.
Khalafov stressed that they decided to regard holding of bilateral and multilateral meeting on the status of the sea as expedient. Touching upon resumption of the bilateral consultations with Turkmenistan, he said that Azerbaijan did not stop the negotiations, the date of the next consultations was not determined. “We are working in this direction,” the Deputy Minister underlined.
