Head of Azerbaijan Parliamentary Delegation to PACE: Sitting of Subcommittee on Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict to Be Held within Winter Session of PACE

MP Samad Seyyidov, the Head of the Azerbaijani Parliamentary delegation to PACE, Milli Majlis (Parliament), has exclusively told Trend today that a meeting of the Subcommittee on the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict is expected to be held within the forthcoming winter session of PACE (Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe).

He said that during the sitting of the Subcommittee, opinion exchange on organization of a meeting between Azerbaijani and Armenian delegations would be held. Finally we could make a decision that in the beginning of the session, Tigran Torosyan, the Head of the Armenian delegation and I will meet Lord Russell Johnston, the Head of the PACE Subcommittee for Nagorno-Karabakh. A decision whether the two delegations will meet with each other within the session or not is expected to be made during the meeting. However, we have a preliminary agreement on the meeting between the two delegations. But, it is up to Lord Russell Johnston whether this meeting will he held or not, he said.

Mr. Seyyidov said that after the Subcommittee was founded within PACE, the Heads of the Azerbaijani and Armenian delegations have met Lord Russell Johnston. This meeting is usually held in the first day of the session of PACE.

According to Mr. Seyyidov,, the resolution on Nagorno-Karabakh adopted by PACE in January, 2005 meets with Azerbaijan position and interests. We are interested in the fulfillment of this resolution. One of the articles of the document is connected with the foundation of the Subcommittee, holding meetings and opinion exchanges within it. At the same time, holding meetings between representatives of Azerbaijan and Armenian communities of Nagorno-Karabakh has been envisaged. I think that holding such meetings is extremely important, and they have an influence on the negotiations from a psychological point of view. The more we shall have such meetings, more information we can bring to the attention of PACE leadership. The position of Nagorno-Karabakh Azerbaijan community should always be taken into consideration, she said.

Touching upon the issue on holding the meeting between Azerbaijan and Armenian communities of Nagorno-Karabakh, he said that Azerbaijan was an adherer of holding such a meeting. Opinion exchange on results of the war and other issues ought to be held and I am sure it will be held, said Mr. Seyyidov.
