Iran Supports Peaceful Settlement of regional problems: Foreign Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend K.Ramazanova / Tehran's policy on the Caspian Sea includes ensuring the peaceful settlement of the regional conflict, Iran's Foreign Minister, Manouchehr Mottaki stated on Wednesday during a meeting in Teheran amongst foreign ministers of the Caspian Sea littoral states.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran calls on all littoral states to make the Caspian Sea the sea of friendship through the cooperation of long-term issues," Manouchehr Mottaki emphasized, Iranian media sources reports.

Mottaki stated previous accords on the legal regime of the Caspian Sea, namely the Soviet-Iranian agreements of 1921 and 1940, although they are not comprehensive, they serve as a "good basis for re-establishing the legal status of the Caspian Sea."

In addition, Mottaki called for an increase in energy cooperation among the coastal states and expressed Iran's readiness to aid the Caspian Sea littoral states with "easy, cheap and safe" transfer of their oil and gas.

According to Mottaki , the foreign ministers from the five Caspian Sea littoral states will also discuss during their meeting the preparations for the Second Caspian Summit, which will be held in Tehran in the following months.

Azerbaijan will be presented at the meeting by the Foreign Minister, Elmar Mammadyarov.
