Azerbaijani Life Imprisoned Inmates Require Changing Prison Regime

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / The life imprisoned inmates in Azerbaijani Gobustan closed prison require changing the prison regime and replace life imprisonment sentence to 15 years imprisonment, said the Chairman of Azerbaijan Anti-Torture Committee, Elchin Behbudov.

Behbudov and several experts of the Committee met with the inmates. According to Behbudov, each of six meeting participants asked to change life imprisonment to 15 years prison. Requirements included creating conditions to engage in sport, allocate wide area for walk, provide TV in the cells, allow to permanently speak with their relatives by telephone (it is allowed to speak by telephone once per two months), meet with relatives each two months, but not four months, etc. The inmates complained of the indifference of the doctors.

According to Behbudov, the Chief of the Gobustan closed prison said that these requirements are not in disposal of the Penal Service and the Head of the prison appealed to the Azerbaijani Parliament.

According to Behdudov, considering the hard health of inmate 68 year old Vagif Huseynov, he appealed to the State Head.

Inmate Israil Gurbanov born in 1961 said that during the investigation, he incurred torture and was forced to acknowledge the crime that he has not committed. Vugar Aliyev also highlighted his innocence.
