New Law Draft on Education to be Presented for Discussions in Azerbaijani Parliament

Azerbaijan, Baku, 19 March /corr. Trend I.Alizade / On 10 April, the new Law Draft on Education will be presented for discussions in the second reading in Azerbaijani Parliament.

"According to Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev's order on higher education development, changes will be made to the draft law," the Chairman of Azerbaijan Parliament's Permanent Commission on Science and Education, Shamsaddin Hajiyev, reported to Trend on 19 March.

On 31 Jan 2008, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, signed a decree to hold a number of events with regards to the integration of higher educational institutions of Azerbaijan to the European higher educational institutions. According to the decree, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Education and other educational organizations should, by 30 March, prepare project of State Program for Reforms in Higher Education System of Azerbaijan for 2008-2012. Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry was in-charge of holding relevant events to sign international agreements realizing Bologna system in Azerbaijan to realize the integration of higher educational institutions of Azerbaijan to the European higher educational institutions. The Cabinet of Ministers was in-charge of settling the issues arising from the decree.

The current Law on Education was adopted in 1992. In 1995, the Parliament began devising a new draft law on education, but the law has not been adopted during the past 12 years.

The new law draft envisages nine years obligatory secondary education.

On 28 Dec, the law draft was adopted in Parliament in the first reading.
