Azerbaijani court rejects lawsuit by editor-in-chief charged of high treason

Azerbaijani court rejected the lawsuit by the editor-in-chief of the Talishi sado newspaper. Novruzali Mammadov, chief editor of Tolishi Sado newspaper, was charged on the high treason against the National Security Ministry due to infringement of rights on intellectual property.

At today's sitting the Baku Appeal Court kept in power the decision of the Sabail district court, Mammadov's lawyer Ramiz Mammadov told Trend news.

According to him, Mammadov's processor was confiscated by the NSM officials as evidence.


When the processor was returned, about Mamedov's dozen scientific papers were destroyed.

Editor-in-chief asked the court to the NSM to compensate the material and moral damage caused to him by the infringement of intellectual property rights.

The lawyer also said that they will appeal to the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan on the decision of the Appeal Court.

Mammadov, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper and head of Department of the National Academy of Sciences Linguistic Institute, and Guliyev, the official of the newspaper, were arrested early Feb. in 2007.

The court sentenced Mammadov to 10-year imprisonment and Guliyev - to six-year imprisonment. They were charged of Articles 274 (high treason) and 283 (spread of national, racial and religious animosity) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code.

On Jan. 14, Mammadov was transferred from the Isolation cell N 1 in the Bail settlement to the prison N 15.
