School-leavers' knowledge is low in Azerbaijan: chairman of SSAC

Level of school-leavers' knowledge is too low in Azerbaijan compared to previous years, Chairman of the State Students Admission Commission (SSAC) Maleyka Abbaszade said on June 5.

"On the basis of test examinations, conducted in 41 countries of the region, the level of school-leavers' knowledge decreased by 10-15 points," she said.

Abbaszade said the last test examinations will be held on June 7. It will be attended by 30,000 school-leavers.

The test examinations involved 181,521 people. In total, 68,000 school-leavers passed 181,000 test examinations.

Of the school-leavers who passed the test examination, 68,000 are graduates of this year. Of these, 60,000 - the graduates of the Azerbaijani sector, 8,000 - Russian.

This year, the number of graduates of secondary schools has fallen by 5,000, the number of entrants - 2,000 people, Abbaszade said.

She said most of applications were submitted for the fourth group of specialties in 2009.

"A total of 16,587 people applied to the fourth group of specialties. Five people claim for one place," the chairman of the SSAC said. Abbaszade said most of them wish to study medicine.
