The spring racing season kicked off in Turkmenistan - the homeland of famous Akhalteke horses, Turkmenatlary (Turkmen Horses) state association said on Monday.

True lovers of Akhalteke horses were observing the races at the equestrian complex, the newspaper Neutral Turkmenistan reported.

It is expected that the main annual trophy will be drawn on the last Sunday of April. According to the tradition, the Turkmen holiday of heavenly horses is widely celebrated in the country on that day.

The equestrian sport is very popular and has an ancient tradition in Turkmenistan. The International Association of Akhal-Teke Breeding with headquarters in Ashgabat was established in the country.

About a year ago, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited a large equestrian complex near Ashgabat, where he held talks on cooperation with director of the French Pegasus Farms Ltd Herve Barjot.

Pegasus Farms Ltd has been recognized as one of the leading European companies in racing industry. It has annually entered the top five owners of horses for smooth race since 2004.
