In Azerbaijan, as in most countries of the world, there are still problems in the field of gender equality, the Chief Adviser of the UN Population Fund Farid Babayev stated.

He made the remarks while speaking today at the final conference on the pilot project "Education of young people in promoting the value of female children in Azerbaijan".

"Today in Azerbaijan, the problem related to a serious violation of the proportions of the sexes among children born in Azerbaijan attracts particular attention," he said.

Babayev said that according to the latest research conducted in connection with this phenomenon, in the future, this situation can lead to extremely negative consequences in terms of the overall structure and dynamics of the population.

"The excessive increase in the number of men may result in their lack of a partner for family formation, the widespread occurrence of violent behaviour, deterioration of overall criminal situation in the country, early marriage, trafficking in human beings and other negative aspects," he said.

"The prevention of this phenomenon has been one of the priorities of the UN Population Fund for several years. In close cooperation with the Fund, we are implementing various projects with the Azerbaijani Government," Babayev said.
