TARTAR, Azerbaijan, April 4. A tree-planting event was held in Tartar district to commemorate the International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, the Karabakh bureau of Trend reports.

Members of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) Public Council attended the ceremony, as did personnel from the International Eurasia Press Foundation's (IFEP) First Women Sappers of Azerbaijan project, as well as mine victims and their families.

The event took place in the famous Sultanbud forest, which was destroyed during the Karabakh war and is located between the villages of Burujlu and Khoruzlu in the Tartar province. Participants planted 3,300 trees with the goal of promoting worldwide mine action initiatives, restoring the historical significance of the Sultanbud forest, and preparing for Azerbaijan's COP29 in 2024.

Representatives of the UN Development Program's Advisory Group on Mines and ANAMA, financed by the European Union and the US State Department, as well as workers from an IFEP project supported by the UK government, also attended the session.

The United Nations General Assembly declared April 4 an International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action to promote awareness about the dangers of mines and unexploded ordnance.

Following the liberation of its lands, Azerbaijan began operations in November 2020 to clean its lands of mines, booby traps, and other weaponry left behind by illegal Armenian forces.
