BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. A panel session themed "The Role of Higher Education in Addressing Climate Change: Leadership, Innovation, and Impact" organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) has taken place within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Agreement on Climate Change (COP29), Trend reports.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Director of the UNITAR Ebru Canan-Sokullu noted that in recent years, many higher education institutions have added educational programs related to sustainability and climate change to their curricula.

"Universities are conducting scientific research on climate change. In this matter, young people bear a great responsibility. The new generation will play an important role in addressing climate change issues," she said.

The Rector of Bahcesehir University Esra Hatipoglu, said that universities will contribute to educating the next generations on climate issues.

"Higher education institutions must expand their experience and knowledge on this topic. Along with students, other individuals can also attend the climate change seminars we regularly organize. Universities must support students in their initiatives. Our goal should be to create sustainable ecological campuses," she said.

The CEO of GEDU Global Education from India Vishwajeet Rana emphasized that COP29 will contribute to the energy transition. He noted that everyone, regardless of where they live, can use new technologies to achieve a more sustainable future.

The session concluded with discussion of cooperation issues between universities, and answering questions.

The opening ceremony of the much-anticipated COP29 conference has kicked off today at the Baku Olympic Stadium.

Representatives, leaders, and climate experts from around the globe gathered to mark the beginning of what is set to be one of the largest climate events of the year.

The decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 of last year.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed in June 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The “COP” (Conference of the Parties) is the highest governing body responsible for overseeing the convention’s implementation.

A total of 198 countries participate in the convention. Unless otherwise agreed, COP is held annually. The first COP took place in Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat headquartered in Bonn.
