Some 250 Prisoners Released in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr K. Zarbaliyeva / Some 250 prisoners were released on 10 May due to the fulfillment of the Bill on Amnesty adopted 8 May in Azerbaijan, a South Caucasus country.

Some 9 amnestied prisoners of Women Prison 4, 1 of Reformatory, and 32 of Prison 1 were released. On 11 May, another 150 inmates will be released from prisons and some 800 prisoners will be released in near future. Another 885 prisoners will be released by stages afterwards.

Nazim Alakbarov, the deputy justice minister and the head of the Penitentiary Service, reported that the inmates with 6 months and 1 year of imprisonment remaining will be released at first. The inquiries on other amnestied prisoners will be submitted to correspondent organizations. After the replies the inmates will be released.

Total 8 Bills on Amnesty have been adopted in Azerbaijan. In compliance with the bills some 21,000 prisoners have been realized. Since 1992 some 42 pardon decrees have been issued so far with 4,500 inmates released.
