Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / A report by the Green Party of Azerbaijan as a result of three months of monitoring says that areas for keeping and utilizing waste in Baku present a threat to the population.

The Green Party of Azerbaijan states that the management of domestic and commercial waste in Baku, Sugayt and surrounding areas is carried out by violating ecological legislation.

"The collection, transportation, maintenance and sterilization of waste should be implemented by the organizations that have licenses, special equipment, territory, transport means and staff. This requirement is drastically violated. Approximately 60% of the juridical entities who have received licenses from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan do not possess relevant conditions and equipment," stated the Party's report.

According to the monitoring, violating the rules whilst collecting, processing and keeping domestic and commercial waste is anti-sanitary and worsens the ecological situation in Baku and surrounding areas. It needs to especially highlight the construction territories near refuse areas. The absence of controls in these areas result in increasing number of refuse sites and are a source of dangerous infection.

The domestic and commercial waste is not assorted and utilized in the open air. Due to threats presented by radioactive and toxic waste to the environment, the Green Party of Azerbaijan considers it necessary to strengthen controls on this sphere.
