Lawsuit of Gundalik Azerbaijan Newspaper’s Editor against Azerbaijani Interior Minister Turned Down

Zarbaliyeva / The Baku Court of Appeals turned down the appeal of the Gundalik Azerbaijan newspaper's Editor, Uzeyir Jafarov, against the decision of the Baku City Sabail District Court which had declined his lawsuit against the Azerbaijani Interior Minister, Ramil Usubov, and the head of the press centre of the New Azerbaijan Party (NAP), Huseyn Pashayev. The appeal was denied by Judge Tofik Samadov and upheld by the Sabail District Court on 16 August.

Jafarov said that he would appeal to the Supreme Court and the European Court on Human Rights regarding the Court of Appeals decision.

The Interior Minister stated that the beating of the Editor in front of the Gundalik Azerbaijan editorial office on 20 April had been organized by Jafarov himself. According to Huseyn Pashayev, the incident occurred as a result of a family quarrel. Jafarov's lawsuit to the Sabail District Court regarding insulting his honour and dignity was returned to the postal addresses of the defendants and had not been mentioned in the appeal. According to Jafarov, the work addresses of Usubov and Pashayev were indicated.

The plaintiff demands that the defendants disprove his claims. He also demands compensation for moral damages in the sum of AZN 8,347,000 from Usubov and AZN 400,000 from Pashayev. According to the journalist, the compensation will be transferred to war veterans, invalids, and the families of the people who died in the war.
