Development of a feasibility study for construction of a desalination plant in Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region is to be finished before the end of 2Q2020, a representative of Kazakhstan’s KazMunayGas company (KMG) told Trend.

The corresponding memorandum of understanding and cooperation on the plant’s construction was signed between Ozenmunaigas JSC and KMG Engineering LLP (both KMG subsidiaries) with the Zhanaozen city’s akimat (administrative center).

Memorandum oversees changes to the feasibility studies for the construction of the plant developed by KMG Engineering. As a result a desalination plant with capacity of 50,000 cubic meters a day will be constructed in region’s Kenderli recreation area.

KMG official said that the plant’s construction is planned within next two-three years and is to be carried out in one stage. Currently developing feasibility study oversees that the plant will be commissioned in 2022, whereas the investments value will be nearly 70 billion tenge ($176.07 million), the official said.

Talking environmental effect from plant’s commissioning the official said that based on the environmental analysis, the project’s implementation will have a positive impact on Manystau region’s environment and, in particular, will provide region’s residents with full access to drinking water.

Mangystau region is among Kazakhstan’s regions where the water supply issue is particularly relevant, as the region is located in a semi-desert zone, and region’s water resources are limited.

KazMunayGas National Company is Kazakhstan's national operator for exploration, production, refining and transportation of hydrocarbons, representing the state in Kazakhstan's petroleum sector.
