It was decided to build a bridge over the Astarachay between Iran and Azerbaijan within a year, the Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi told Trend.
Mousavi said that the two countries have recently signed a memorandum on the construction of a new road bridge over the Astarachay River.
"The current bridge over the river dates back to World War II. All cargo transportation is carried out over this bridge, and with the operning of the new bridge, cargo transportation via the old bridge will be reduced. The construction of the bridge will cost about 4.5-5 million euro and will be built jointly by the two countries. With the opening of new bridge, trade turnover, inculing, imports, exports and transit between the two countries will increase," the ambassador added.
According to the statistics of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), Iran’s trade tunover with Azerbaijan amounted to 1.02 million tons worth $587 million over the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021).
While in the first two months of the current Iranian year (from March 21 through May 21, 2021), the trade turnover amounted to about 137,000 tons worth $58.8 million.
On June 9, 2021, Azerbaijan and Iran signed a memorandum on the construction of a new bridge over the Astarachay.
