In 2007 50% of Deaths in Azerbaijan Take Place in Construction Sector – Deputy Minister
Azerbaijan, Baku, 15 January / Trend corr. U.Ismaylova / Around 259 accidents occurred in the manufacturing industry of Azerbaijan in 2007. Sixty-seven accidents fell on the construction sector, Natig Mammadov, the Deputy Labour and Social Protection Ministry of Azerbaijan, stated during the Protection of Labour in Construction Sector workshop.
According to Mammadov, the number of deaths in the manufacturing industry was 149 and 71 people died during the construction process.
As a result of the monitoring by the Labour Inspection, the number of mass accidents made up 18, and 8 took place within the construction industry. Forty-seven incidents have been the fault of the company, 60 incidents have been the fault of the victims, 131 incidents have been the fault of both the company and the victim and 21 deaths have been due to outside influences.
A building which was under construction by Mutaffakir company collapsed on 28 August at 17:00 hours. The head of the company, Askar Aliyev, was arrested for contravening Article 222 (violation of security rules in construction work) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. The death toll has reached 25. Use of low-quality concrete and violation of security rules caused the collapse of the building.
