The Nikkei 225 Stock Average advanced 186.26 points, or 1.44 per cent, to 13,158.32.
The broader Topix index of all first-section issues was also up 19.06 points, or 1.51 per cent, to 1,282.97.
On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar was quoted at 103.90-95 yen, up from Wednesday's 5 pm quote of 103.62-64 yen.
The euro was quoted at 1.5276-81 dollars, up from Wednesday's 5 pm quote of 1.5181-84 dollars, and at 158.77-82 yen, up from 157.32-36 yen.
