WB Monitors Azerbaijan’s Project on Struggle against Bird Flu

Azerbaijan, Baku, 2 December / Trend corr. N.Ismayilova/ Brian Bedard, senior specialist of the World Bank (WB), is in Baku to monitor realization a project on struggle against bird flu in Azerbaijan, the WB Baku Office said on 2 December.

" Mission is of survey character and will be in the country by 5 December to get familiarization with realization of the project," the Baku Office said.

The WB allocated unused means of loans, which was issued to Technical assistance in institutional construction of Azerbaijan (IBTA-2), in 3.56mln SDR (about $5.145mln) to this project.

It is planned to purchase reagents for laboratories, strengthen their material and technical base and buy specialized equipments within the framework of the WB's project. At present laboratories have been supplied with equipments, bought through budget means and currently they can conduct immediate research. Their activity will be improved under this project.

The second part of the project envisages strengthening potential of Veterinary service (material and technical equipment of the service and its regional offices, trainings of staff). The project will gradually cover equipment of laboratories of the Ministry of Health, purchase of equipment and holding trainings.

Monitoring is held in Azerbaijan periodically on warn of bird flu and the next one will begin on 15 December in 2008.

A special work group, comprising employees of the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Ecology and Natural Resources, as well as hunters' society, will conduct the monitoring in Absheron peninsula, its near territories, regions of Davachi, Salyan, Agjabadi, Lankaran and coastal of the Caspian Sea.

More than 8,000 specimen of blood, as well as pathological material of domestic and wild birds, were researched as a result of five monitoring in 2008.

The State Service conducted 12 monitoring, researching more than 8,000 wild and domestic birds, in 2007. Virus bearer has not been revealed in any of them.
