Meeting of Azerbaijani, Russian and Iranian work groups within North-South railway project to take place in St.Petersburg

E.Ismaylov / "The business plan, which was worked out by Russia within the North-South railway project, will be considered by Azerbaijani, Russian and Iranian Work Groups in St.Petersburg on Dec.25-26," Igbal Huseynov, the deputy chief of the Azerbaijani Railway Department, said.

"If the supplied business-plan is approved, then the heads of railway departments will meet to sign the final document. Later more detailed works will be launched to develop feasibility study," Huseynov said.

The project of "North-South" transport corridor envisages creation of united railway communication from Europe through Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran to India and countries of southeastern Asia. Over $400mln are required for realization of the project, moreover one must make the large part of the works in the IRI (Islamic Republic of Iran), which does not have railway communication to the boundary with Azerbaijan.

The works in the territory of Azerbaijan envisages building about of 8.5km railway to the Astara station with the systems of change of pairs of wheels, boundary and customs infrastructure. It is necessary to construct boundary railway bridge. However, the realization of this project will be realized on the parity basis with Iran..

The projection on cargo transport via the corridor will be 5mln tons per year at the first stage and the figure is expected to be increased to 10-15mln tons per year in the future.
