Over 1mln winter grain sown hectares in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 23 / Trend , S. Babayeva/ Winter grain was sown in 1.28mln hectares

in Azerbaijan, according to State Statistics Committee. Moreover, wheat was sown on about 800,000 hectares and barley on 242,000 hectares.

By Dec. 17, 79,300 hectares were sown in Sheki, 62,400 hectares in Jalilabad, 43,100 hectares in Neftchala and 27,000 hectares in Nakhchivan.

Grain production in the country will make up at least 2mln tones in 2009, according to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Agriculture.

In 2008, grain and legumes (including corn) production amounted to 2.5mln tones, which is up 492,000 than in 2007. Country's grain sown area made up 894.03 hectares. Crop capacity per hectare comprised 27.9 centners, which is up 0.8 centners than in 2007.

Winter and spring wheat production totalled 1.7mln tones (68.7%) of overall production.

Azerbaijan's annual grain requirement makes up 3mln tones, with 1mln of them imported.

The Ministry of Agriculture forecasts to fully meet the domestic grain demand through local production next years.
