The US economy shed 598,000 jobs in January, making it the second worst month in the country's history and a sign that the country's recession is worsening, the Labour Department said Friday, dpa reported.

The unemployment rate climbed to 7.6 per cent from 7.2 per cent in December. More than 2.5 million jobs have been lost in just the last 5 months in the United States.
