Kaczysnki, Tusk remain at odds on euro strategy

Polish President Lech Kaczynski hosted a meeting Wednesday on the economic crisis with his political adversary, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, but the two remained at odds whether moving a step closer to joining the euro would help Poland fight the crisis, dpa reported.

It was a rare meeting on the issue between the two men, who disagree on how Poland should deal with a weak zloty and slowing economy.

Tusk said after the meeting that Poland is "noticeably closer to the road to the euro being a shared one."

But Kaczynski said despite "constructive dialogue" there was still "strong disagreement" on whether the pre-euro stage ERM-2 (Exchange Rate Mechanism) is "pro or anti-crisis."

Tusk has said Poland would work to adopt the euro by 2012 and that the financial crisis gave the country more reasons to join the 16- member area.

But the plan has come under fire from Kaczynski, who says joining the single currency framework's ERM-2 now could make the crisis worse.

The meeting, held behind closed doors at the presidential palace, included ministers, trade union representatives, employers and bankers.

The summit comes as Poland is getting ready in March to launch official talks on joining ERM-2, the preparatory stage for adopting the euro.
