In late December, the Ministry of Transport of Azerbaijan will announce a tender to determine the contractor for the construction of a new international trading port in Alat settlement (near Baku), AzerTAj state news agency reported with reference to the head of transport policy and economy department of the Ministry of Transport Sadraddin Mammadov.
"The general plan of the port is ready and currently studies are being carried out," said Mammadov. Feasibility study for the project is also ready.
Designing of the new port is made by the Dutch Royal Haskoning Company.
This port will be multi-module, since in addition to logistics center, there are plans to create free economic zones on this territory.
The seaport will be relocated in three stages. The first phase will sea preparation of the general plan of the construction site, the second one - seabed excavation and construction and final stage tender to select a contractor. With completing construction in 2015, the seaport will handle 11.6 million tons of cargo. The project is estimated at $400 million.
According to Mammadov, 11 berths will be built on the new port, the construction of six of which will be completed in the first phase of the project. Consequently, these berths will be built in 2009-2011. After the completion of the port, it will be able receive up to 11.6 million tons of cargo.
Currently there is a total of six international trade ports in the Caspian Sea - Baku (Azerbaijan) and Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan), Aktau (Kazakhstan), Astrakhan (Russia), Enzeli and Neka (Iran).
