IMF postpones consultations with Azerbaijan on article IV over 2010

IMF mission's visit to Azerbaijan will be held in February 2010 to conduct consultations with the Azerbaijani government on article IV of the agreement 'Establishment of IMF', head of IMF representation in Baku Koba Gvenetadze said on October 8. Before, this visit was repeatedly postponed. First, it was reported about survey in June. Afterwards, this term was postponed for September. 

"The fund changed its head of the mission on Azerbaijan. Presently, Deputy Director of IMF department on Middle East and Central Asia, Valeria Fichera deals with African region and operates in the constant representation of the fund in Senegal," Gvenetadze said.

He said that IMF has not chosen a new head of the mission on Azerbaijan.  

Consultations are held with the Azerbaijani government upon article IV in all IMF member-states once per year. Major goal is to appreciate short-term and medium-term tasks of the government on development prospects of Azerbaijani economy, discussion of plans on structural reforms. As a result of the visit the mission usually prepares report to be submitted for consideration of IMF executive directors' council.

The Azerbaijani government cooperates with IMF at the level of consultations within article IV for four years. So, prospects of cooperation have not practically discussed during the visits on the basis of program. Moreover, technical assistance rendered by IMF in different spheres also increases.
