As of late September, 371,013 pensioners are older persons, of whom 221,978 people - are women, the Azerbaijani State Social Protection Fund (SSPF) reported on Friday.
On Dec.14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons.
"Azerbaijan always pays special attention and care to the elderly. National Leader Heydar Aliyev signed the law 'On social care for older persons' on June 22, 2001, under which the Azerbaijani citizens aged 70, as well as foreigners residing in the country but not having the Azerbaijani citizenship are recognized as the elderly," the fund reported.
The country registered 284,533 elderly pensioners aged 70-80, 77,079 elderly pensioners - aged 80-90 and 9,401 pensioners - over 90 years.
As of July 1, the number of pensioners in Azerbaijan amounted to 1,291,139 people.
