Azerbaijan continues improving water supply system with support of IFIs

Within development of project on water supply and sewerage services, jointly implemented by the Azerbaijani government and the World Bank (WB), work is conducted to ensure the sustainable provision of water and sewerage services in 14 regional centers and cities across the country, the President of Azersu JSC Nizameddin Rzayev said in an interview posted on the official website of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.
The project will lay sewer systems and improve water supply in the city of Khirdalan and districts of Bilasuvar, Gabala, Shamakhi, Saatli, Hajigabul, Gazakh, Guba, Gakh, Mingechevir, Sabirabad, Samukh, Shamkir and Tartar, Rzayev said.

According to him, under a project funded by the German KfW Bank and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) work continues on the reconstruction of water supply and sewerage in the cities of Sheki and Ganja. Sheki city with a population of 65,000 people and Ganja - 344,000 people will be provided with sustainable water supply and sewerage system.

The first stage of a similar project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been completed. As part of this project, water receiving facilities and water supply lines have been constructed in the cities of Agdash and Goychay. According to Rzayev, an agreement has been reached with the ADB to provide the second tranche of multitranche finance mechanism of the investment program. The second tranche of funds is envisaged for execution of works on reconstruction of water supply and sewerage lines in Baku and the surrounding towns and villages, in the districts of Agdjabedi, Balaken and Beylagan, as well as the completion of the works in Nakhchivan, Agdash and Goychay cities.
