Azerbaijan, Baku, April 17 / Trend E. Ismayilov /

The structure of trade and economic relations between Azerbaijan and Russia need improving, chairman of the parliamentary committee on economic policy Ziyad Samadzade told Trend today.

The Azerbaijan-Russia business forum organised by the Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been held in Baku today.

"Trade turnover between our countries increases every year," he said. "It is already close to $3 billion. Of course, the structure of our relations needs improving. As Azerbaijan has set the task to rapidly and actively develop the non-oil sector, it will affect the structure of foreign trade transactions between countries."

He said that Azerbaijan and Russia are strategic partners. These relations have been established since the days of the USSR. After Azerbaijan became an independent country, relations with Russia began developing on the basis of new principles, the market economy and statehood.

"The structure of trade and economic relations with Russia differs from that of other countries where the oil sector is predominat," Samadzade said. At present, there are specific areas of cooperation, for example in the agricultural sector. Azerbaijan established relations in the humanitarian sphere and innovative technologies with many entities of the Russian Federation.
