Kazakhstan has initiated the New Silk Road project, President Nursultan Nazarbayev said at the 25th plenary meeting of the Foreign Investors' Council in Astana on Tuesday.

"I announce the launch of a large-scale 'New Silk Road' project. Kazakhstan should become a bridge between Europe and Asia," Nazarbayev said.

The president said that thanks to this project, the volume of transit traffic through Kazakhstan by 2014 should double to 50 million tons, while the volume of trade operations with neighboring countries will amount to $1 trillion.

The 'New Silk Road' will be based on four principles: speed, stability, security and modernity.
