Azerbaijan and Japan sign new grant agreement

The Government of Japan will provide to Azerbaijan a grant of 777 million Yen, or $7.45 million for the improvement of equipment for reclamation and irrigation, according to a statement released by the Japanese Embassy on Monday.

According to the statement, a grant agreement will be signed on April 17 in Baku. Relevant documents will be signed by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Azerbaijan Shusuke Watanabe and the Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov, as well as the head of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Uzbekistan Masao Shicano and the chairman of the Irrigation and Water Management JSC Ahmed Ahmedzade.

The funds will be allocated under the program of total grant assistance of the Government of Japan. Grant funds will be used to purchase new trucks, bulldozers and other equipment used for land reclamation and irrigation.

Since 1999, the Government of Japan has allocated to Azerbaijan funds totaling 3.79 billion yen (about $34 million) under seven projects, including the new grant.
