Azerbaijan, Baku, April 17 / Trend, A. Akhundov /

In Azerbaijan, the agriculture and water supply sectors need more investments, including investments from financial institutions, than other spheres, Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov told journalists on Wednesday.

"First of all, assets from international financial institutions are required for the development of agriculture, in particular, for cleaning up the lands and canals, as well as prevention of soil salinization. About 47 percent of the population lives in villages," Sharifov said.

According to him, Azerbaijan still has a water supply problem.

"The problem with water always existed in Azerbaijan. Almost no assets were allocated to this field in the 1990s" the Deputy Prime Minister said.

As Sharifov said earlier, the projects for the creation and reconstruction of water supply systems in the territory of Azerbaijan require about $5 billion according to preliminary estimates.

These works are planned to be implemented both by budgetary assets and credits from international financial institutions. $1.8 billion have already attracted from international financial institutions.

According to him, the works are currently being conducted in 38 cities and towns, including 21 by the assets of international finanical institutions.
