Work within the framework of the first stage of construction of a new international maritime trade port in the Alat settlement (65 kilometers to the south from Baku) is planned to be completed by the second half of 2014, an informed source told Trend on Wednesday.

A significant part of work within the framework of the first stage of the project is already completed, and at the present time, the process of construction is underway.

"But there is still some work, and the first stage of construction of a new port, probably, will finish in the second half of the year", the source mentioned.

As minister of transport of Azerbaijan Ziya Mamedov mentioned, in 2014 a train terminal and road infrastructure of the new port will be put into operation. In 2015, the construction of a loading terminal in the new port will be completely finished.

The construction of the new international port started in November 2010.

The construction is divided into three stages. The first stage considers construction of two train and three cargo terminals for accepting containers, ships called "ro-ro" and ordinary (universal) dry cargos. The second stage of the project considers construction of three more cargo terminals. The third one will construct two additional cargo terminals. The port will be able to accept to 11.6 million tons of cargo per year.
