By Emin Aliyev - Trend:

The vast majority of narcotic substances, which are smuggled to Azerbaijan, come to the country from Iran, chairman of Azerbaijani State Customs Committee (SCC), Aydin Aliyev told journalists on Jan. 30.

"In 2013 the customs bodies prevented smuggling of more than 135 kilograms of drugs to Azerbaijan. Except for a few cases related to attempt of drug smuggling from Russia, all other similar facts were recorded on the border with Iran," he said.

It is necessary to pay attention to the structure of smuggling of such drugs into the country, the committee's chairman said.

"For the first time heroin has a high proportion in total smuggling. This is a worrying fact that can not be ignored. For a long time we have not been faced with attempts to smuggle cocaine into the country - such cases were recorded in 2013," Aydin Aliyev said.

He went on to add that the attempts of smuggling of methamphetamines, the raw materials for production of many synthetic drugs, should be referred to as a serious factor.

Aliyev also said that the attempts of smuggling large quantities of mobile equipment and jewelry have also been prevented.
