New ferry terminal, which is being built as part of the creation of new seaport in Azerbaijan will be commissioned in the fall of 2014. The new port is being built in Alat settlement (65 km south of Baku), a source in the Ministry of Transport of Azerbaijan said Sept. 4.

The source said that the project of a new seaport has great value for the transport sector of the country.

"Construction works within the framework of this important project continue. The launch of a container terminal at the new port will be in late September-early October this year, according to preliminary data," said the source.

The ferry terminal will be commissioned until the end of 2014 as part of the new construction of International Sea Trade Port in Azerbaijan.

Construction of the new port, which began in November 2010, is being carried out in three stages. The first phase of the project involves the construction of two ferry and three cargo berths for reception of containers, vessels of "ro-ro" type and conventional (universal) bulk carriers. The second phase of the project involves the construction of three more cargo berths, the third - the construction of two additional cargo berths. The port can receive up to 11.6 million metric tons of cargo per year.

Creation of powerful port infrastructure is important in terms of cargo transportation by the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, which is expected to be fully commissioned in 2015.
