Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen International Airport will be expanded, the Turkish TRT Haber TV channel reported Dec. 14.

Currently, an additional second terminal is being built at the airport, and construction of a second runway with a length of 3,000 meters has started.

The second runway will be ready by 2018.

Earlier, the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey said that Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen International Airport will be connected to the city center by a high-speed railway.

At present, the project is under development and it has already received an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), according to the ministry.

The total cost of the project is 4.853 billion Turkish liras ($1.249 billion as of Dec. 14), the ministry said.

The first airport in Turkey was built in 1912 and was used for military purposes.
