Baku, Azerbaijan, May 16

By Azad Hasanli - Trend:

Azerbaijan and Australia are discussing new agriculture projects, the founder and director of the Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce in Australia, Nizami Jafarov, told Trend May 16.

Jafarov said since the end of last year the companies of the two countries have been discussing a project on supply of pomegranate juice from Azerbaijan to Australia. Jafarov noted that Australia has a great interest in this product given the competitive [compared to Australian] prices for Azerbaijani products.

"Australia is also interested in buying Azerbaijani spices, such as saffron, as well as rearing new breeds of cattle," Jafarov added.

As for Azerbaijan, said Jafarov, the country is interested in the technology of shock freezing of fruits and berries. This year, he continued, also the supply of Australian wine from Perth to Azerbaijan was started for the first time.

"Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Australia is developing on an upward line. Last year's visit to Azerbaijan by an Australian trade mission, which included representatives of more than 30 companies, is an example of such development. Of course, trade relations between the two countries leave much to be desired, but we have great potential, despite the fact that both countries are far from each other," the director of the Chamber of Commerce said.

According to the data published by the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan, trade turnover with Australia in 2017 amounted to $5.5 million. Almost the entire amount fell on the import of Australian products.
