It is necessary to introduce new technologies for silk processing in Azerbaijan, Mehriban Akhundova, chairperson of Azerbaijan’s Textile Producers and Exporters Association, told Trend.
She said that presently, the manufacture of silk products in Azerbaijan is limited to only a few items, and Sheki-Ipak OJSC is the only manufacturer of such products in Azerbaijan.
“It is necessary to introduce the appropriate innovations so that producers would be able to process and color raw silk,” she said. “As far as I know, such plans already exist. It is not very profitable to sell raw silk. Therefore, the development of finishing production will become one of the tasks of the Sheki-Ipak OJSC so that the company would be able to expand the production line, for example, to color silk for clothes. Presently they produce only scarves, and their production is limited.”
In November last year, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree approving the "State Program for Development of Silkworm Breeding and Sericulture in Azerbaijan in 2018-2025".
According to the decree, the state program is approved to develop silkworm breeding and sericulture, increase export potential in this sphere, and ensure employment of rural population.
