Coal production in Uzbekistan decreased by almost 15 percent in January-June 2018, according to preliminary information of the Uzbek State Statistic Committee.
In January-June 2018, 1.589 million tons of coal were produced in Uzbekistan.
During the same period in 2017, coal production in Uzbekistan stood at 1.983 million tons.
In mid-June last year, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved program for the development and modernization of coal industry for 2017-2021.
He also noted major shortcomings revealed in the work of the Uzbekugol company, which is a state monopolist in this field.
The main shortcomings were inefficient operation of existing equipment, weak manufacturing discipline, serious lagging in modernization of capacities and implementation of a number of investment projects.
Two weeks later, the Uzbek president handed over the coal industry from the Uzbekugol company to the Uzbekistan Railways JSC.
