Iranian automotive firms produced 325,876 cars and heavy-duty vehicles in the first three months of the current Iranian fiscal year (started March 21), registering growth compared to the same period last year.

Iran’s Industries Ministry released its periodic automotive statistical report covering local manufacturers’ output during the first three months of this year, saying that 3003,500 cars, 14,500 pickup trucks, and 100,2 buses, minibuses and van were manufactured in the country, indicating a 4.5, 11.2, and 30 percent growth compared to the same period last year, Shata news agency reported on August 2.

The number of heavy vehicles, including trucks and combines, produced during the month totaled 34,500, the report added.

The automobile industry is seen as Iran’s biggest non-oil sector, accounting for nearly 10 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Iran Khodro and Saipa companies account for more than 90 percent of the total domestic production in Iran.

Officials say the country has the capacity to turn into a hub for production of vehicles in the regional market with a population of 400 million people.
