Despite harsh weather conditions of the current growing season, farmers of Kazakhstan’s Jambyl region hope for a good harvest of sugar beet, for which this year they sowed more areas than planned.

Berik Nigmashev, Head of the Agriculture Department of the region’s administration, plans to increase the volume of harvest of sugar beet root crops up to 150,000 tons, Kazinform reported.

He said that this year it was projected to sow sugar beet on an area of 6,500 hectares, but 8,324 hectares were sown instead – that is 128 percent of the plan.

"Harvesting is planned to be carried out from the end of September to the end of November," he added.

Nigmashev added that because of the weather conditions this year, sowing was carried out for a longer period of time. First, the seedlings were weak, but thanks to the measures taken, the situation has normalized, and the harvest should be good.

This year the farms of Jambyl region were provided with the necessary seeds of sugar beet. The total demand is 15,400 seed units, of which 9,400 were delivered from France and 4,000 from Germany.

Last year, more than 120,000 tons of sugar beet were harvested in Jambyl region, and the average yield made up 228 kilogram/hectare. The largest area for sugar beet was in the Korday district, where the highest productivity was recorded last year thanks to the wide application of moisture saving technologies and modern machinery.

Growing sugar beet requires a moderate sunny climate during the growing season and growth. Sugar beet does not need heavy rains, but at the same time, it tolerates drought bad.

To get a good harvest, it is necessary to properly organize pre-sowing preparation, choose the best grade of sugar beet, properly water it and take care of it.

Sugar beet is grown not only for its processing into sugar – it also provides feed for many livestock farms. Molasses, obtained from the waste of sugar production, is used in the confectionery industry and manufacture of bakery products.
