Istanbul's new airport, since the opening until the end of November 2018, served 40,052 passengers, Trend reports referring to Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
The ministry noted that 25,712 of the passengers served accounted for domestic flights, while only 14,340 accounted for international flights.
During the reported period, 190 of the total 297 flights were operated by domestic, and 107 were international, the ministry added.
During the reported period, the volume of freight in Istanbul's new airport reached 262 tons, 118 tons of which accounted for domestic, while 114 tons accounted for international flights.
The opening ceremony of the new airport in Istanbul was held on October 29 and was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey Mehmet Cahit Turhan.
The Ataturk Airport in Istanbul will end operating flights at 00:00 (GMT +3) on Dec. 31. Beginning from 00:00 (GMT +3) on Dec. 31, all passenger and cargo flights will be operated from the third airport of Istanbul.
The third airport was built near the Lake Terkos in northern Istanbul.
Limak-Kolin-Cengiz-MaPa-Kalyon consortium of companies won the tender for construction of the airport.
The first airport in Turkey was built in 1912 and was used for military purposes.
In 1953, Istanbul airport was opened for international flights for the first time, and in 1985 it was renamed in honor of the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
