By Sara Israfilbayova – Trend:

Azerbaijan plans to completely halt the import of potato, Bashir Guliyev, the Head of the Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association, told Trend.

Guliyev mentioned that during the September-October period of 2018, the rate of import duty for potatoes in the country increased, due to which the local producers managed to sell their produce.

“Now there is a huge interest in this industry, and investments are being made. New conditions are being created, storehouses are being built for the production and storage of potatoes,” he said.

According to the Head of the Association, potato is currently being imported from Russia, Belarus, Iran and Turkey, and exported to Russia.

He pointed out that domestic production has been on the increase in Russia in recent years. Domestic production increases at a 25 percent rate each year, but Russia also imports tomatoes from other countries, with Azerbaijan being the primary tomato exporter to Russia.

However, according to the Head of the Association, due to Russia increasing its tomato production, exports from Azerbaijan to Russia may decrease in the coming years.

It is worth mentioning that 889.4 tons of potato were produced from January to November 2018.
