Bus fares in Iran will increase by 20 percent from March 16, Abdolhashem Hassannia, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, told journalists, Trend reports referring to Tasnim News Agency.
According to Hassannia, as is every year, bus fares will be increased on the eve of Novruz holidays (celebrated in Iran as the New Year).
Hassannia added that this is needed for covering the expenses of buses.
Saying that the problems of public transport with tires have been solved, the Deputy Minister said that tires were given to sale facilities at state prices and the market prices have been stabilized.
Over the years, the bus rises were being raised by 20 percent on the eve of Novruz holidays, and returning to normal afterwards. This year, however, the 20-percent increase is going to last and the previous price will not be reinstated.
Last year, due to the shortage of tires for public transport vehicles, prices were considerably raised in Iran, which led to a number of drivers refusing to go to work in protest. The issue was later said to have been resolved.
