Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, June 14

By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend:

The sericulturists of Turkmenistan have overfulfilled their contractual obligations to harvest cocoons of mulberry silkworm, Trend reports referring to Neytralni Turkmenistan newspaper.

In general, more than 2,262 tons of valuable high-quality raw materials were handed over to the state for the country’s textile industry. As such, the plan was fulfilled by 111.5 percent.

This year, state procurement prices for various agricultural products, and particularly for cocoons, have been significantly increased. These measures have become an effective incentive for further increasing the volume of production of agricultural products, the article says.

Sericulture can become one of the key sectors of the local agro-industry and spread throughout Turkmenistan, with the exception of the western regions. More than half of the cocoon harvesting takes place in Lebap Region of Turkmenistan.

The leading enterprises of the industry are the Turkmenabat grainage plant, the Ashgabat filature factory and the Turkmenabat silk production association.

Turkmenistan is the birthplace of keteni silk homespun. According to experts, since ancient times, the Turkmens have been successfully engaged in sericulture. Their homespun matter, thanks to its durability, as well as the brightness and beauty of the pattern, was highly valued and in great demand.

The famous museums of Egypt, the UK and the US store samples of ancient silk fabrics made in the ancient Turkmen city of Merv.
