Iran annually produces 400,000 tons of medicinal plants

Iran produces 400,000 tons of medicinal plants a year, said Hossein Zeynali, medical plants project manager of Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture Jihad, Trend reports via IRNA.

He said that Iran has sown area of 206,000 hectares for medicinal plants and about 2 million people are involved in the sowing, cultivation and harvesting.

He added that Iran exports medicinal plants worth $570 million per year.

“The main medicinal plants of Iran are saffron, Persian cumin, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, Damask rose and so on,” he said.

He noted that about 70 percent of Iranian saffron is exported from Razavi Khorasan province, which amounts to about $400 million a year.

He said that last Iranian year (March 21, 2018 - March 21, 2019), Iranian medicinal plants were exported to Afghanistan, Spain, the UAE, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, the US and Iran’s neighboring countries.
