Uzbekistan continues to expand potato production

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 14

During the four months of 2020, the Fund under the Farmers' Council of Uzbekistan, allocated funds for the purchase of seeds and development of potato growing in the amount of 5.06 billion soum ($498,963), Trend reports citing UzDaily.

The Fund allocated 1.01 billion soum ($99,674) to 81 owners of farmlands, 1.05 billion soum ($103,519) to 35 farms in Gallyaaral district of Jizzakh region, and 3 billion soum ($295,769) to Yangikurgan district of Namangan region.

"The recently adopted resolution "On measures to expand potato production and further development of potato seed production in the country" will give an impetus to the work, as it provides for the creation of potato clusters and cooperatives, specialization of districts and territories in the cultivation of this crop, introduction of a number of innovations and benefits in this segment of agriculture," the report said.

Until 1 July 2023 seed potatoes imported to Uzbekistan will not be subject to import taxes. At the same time, clusters and cooperation will be organized in areas specializing in potato production, advanced and resource-saving technologies and innovative solutions will be introduced.

The decree envisages expansion of potato seed production, seed procurement, as well as organization of potato plantations.

Starting from May 1 of this year, commercial loans for up to 12 months are granted to farms and agricultural enterprises producing this crop, as well as clusters and cooperatives to finance the costs of purchasing seed potatoes.
