Geostat: External merchandise trade shrinks in Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 15

External merchandise trade (excluding non-declared trade) of Georgia amounted to $4.20 billion from January through May 2020, 16.8 percent lower year-on-year, Trend reports via the National Statistic Office of Georgia (Geostat).

As reported, the value of export decreased by 16.2 percent year-on-year and amounted to $1.23 billion, while the import decreased by 17 percent and amounted to $2.97 billion.

The trade deficit equaled $1.73 billion and its share in trade turnover constituted 41.3 percent.

Meanwhile, the external merchandise trade of Georgia amounted to $3.46 billion from January through April 2020.

In the reporting period, the exports equaled $1 billion (11.9 percent lower year-on-year), while the imports stood at $2.46 billion (11.8 percent lower). The negative trade balance was $1.46 billion in January-April 2020, and its share in external trade turnover constituted 42.2 percent.

From January through April 2020, the share of the top ten trading partners by exports from Georgia amounted to 78.1 percent. The top partners were Azerbaijan ($145.2 million), China ($135.5 million) and Russia ($125.6 million).
