Iran to create new fish farms to increase caviar, sturgeon production

Iran's caviar and sturgeon production will increase with the commissioning of new fish farms in the country, Deputy Director-General for Aquaculture of Iran’s Fisheries Organization Hossein Abdollahi said, Trend reports referring to the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Iran.

He made the remark at the commissioning ceremony of the third phase of the sturgeon breeding facility in Qom Province.

The official emphasized that currently, there are more than 130 sturgeon breeding facilities in 21 provinces of Iran, and six of them are operating in Qom Province.

Following the commissioning of the third phase of the sturgeon breeding facility in Iran's Qom Province, about 20 tons of sturgeon will be raised there annually. The 4th phase is expected to be commissioned in the near future allowing the facility to produce 60 tons of sturgeon meat and 1 ton of caviar a year.

As many as 2,830 tons of sturgeon meat and about six tons of caviar are produced annually in 21 provinces of Iran. The company exports about 1.45 tons of caviar, while a certain share is sold by individuals, and the remaining part is sold in the domestic market of Iran.

Iran plans to produce 100 tons of caviar and 10,000 tons of sturgeon meat a year by March 20, 2026.
