Production of sand, gravel, stone in Azerbaijan slumps amid COVID-19

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 1

By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

The production of sand, gravel, and stone in Azerbaijan considerably dropped over the first eight months of 2020, compared to the same period of 2019, Chairman of the Association of Sand, Gravel, and Stone Producers, Niyamaddin Iskandarov told Тrend.

“The sharp downturn in production is associated with the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the world. It is currently impossible to predict the growth and stability of production,” Iskandarov said.

He noted that the volume of production of sand, gravel, and stone is regulated in line with the plan for the development of the mining industry, agreed with the State Agency for Environmental Expertise at the beginning of the year.

“Sales of sand, gravel, and stone are mainly carried out in local markets. Our main customers are construction companies, as well as concrete and asphalt manufacturers. The overwhelming majority of manufacturers operating in the country are from the private sector,” the chairman emphasized.

The activity of the newly created Association of Sand, Gravel, and Stone Producers of Azerbaijan is primarily aimed for the attraction of new memberships, that is, legal entities and individuals working in this area, he added.

The Association of Sand, Gravel, and Stone Producers of Azerbaijan was established on February 14, 2020, by the initiative and with the support of the Small and Medium Business Development Agency under the Ministry of Economy.

The new association was created to support the development of the jewelry industry, promote and implement initiatives in this sector, coordinate entrepreneurs, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and expand cooperation between them.

The Small and Medium Business Development Agency closely cooperates with business associations, promotes the creation of new similar structures among entrepreneurs.

Most of the 15 organizations represented on the Agency's Public Council are industry associations operating in various sectors of the economy.
